Support For Border Wall Surges Due To Immigration Crisis

Donald Trump’s iconic campaign promise gains new popularity due to increased illegal border crossings under the Biden administration.

Support for a border wall has shifted 14 points since November 2015, pre-Trump. A recent Fox News poll showed 57% of registered voters favor building a border wall, while 40% oppose it. In 2015, the figures were 50% in favor and 47% opposed.

These results signify a remarkable turnaround from the border wall’s lowest point at 39% support in September 2018, when 51% opposed it. Notably, traditionally, Democratic groups have contributed significantly to this shift.

Support among Hispanic voters has risen by 14% since February, black voters have shown a 9% increase, Democrats have experienced an 8% boost and voters over 65 have surged by 19%. Republican support increased by 7%.

This increase in support can possibly be attributed to the recent rise in undocumented immigrant arrivals in major American cities, which are largely politically left-leaning.

Over seven million individuals have unlawfully entered the United States since President Joe Biden’s inauguration. The administration’s relatively lenient approach to illegal entry has triggered strong criticism from Republicans.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has been transporting undocumented individuals into sanctuary cities to protest the border policies coming out of Washington. His strategy seems to have succeeded, resulting in demonstrations advocating for enhanced border security even in traditionally liberal sanctuary cities like New York.

Abbott’s administration has transported over 13,000 migrants to New York alone despite the fact that the city has experienced an influx of over 110,000 arrivals over the past year.

In response to demands from Democratic legislators and Republican pressure, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas acknowledged an “immediate need” earlier this month for constructing more border barriers in a critical Texas area with high levels of illegal crossings.

The Biden administration’s immigration policies continue to have notably low public approval, with only 33.4% supporting the administration’s approach on the issue in the RealClearPolitics polling average. A majority, 63.0%, disapprove of the president’s handling of the matter.

The poll took place from October 6 to October 9, with 1,007 registered voters participating, and it carries a margin of error of +/- 3%.
