Supreme Court To Hear Immunity Case For Trump

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court agreed to hear former President Donald Trump’s case for presidential immunity.

The order from the court stated that it intends to address “whether and if so to what extent does a former president enjoy presidential immunity from criminal prosecution for conduct alleged to involve official acts during his tenure in office,” possibly setting a major precedent for future leaders.

Oral arguments for the landmark case are scheduled to take place during the week of April 22, halting any progress on the trial until then. This pushes back the trial date from the previous March 4 date, providing much more time for the Trump legal team to prepare. The soonest a trial could take place is now May.

The New York businessman responded to the news on his Truth Social account, praising the Supreme Court for deciding to take the case.

“Legal Scholars are extremely thankful for the Supreme Court’s Decision today to take up Presidential Immunity,” the post read. “Without Presidential Immunity, a President will not be able to properly function, or make decisions, in the best interest of the United States of America.”

“Presidents will always be concerned, and even paralyzed, by the prospect of wrongful prosecution and retaliation after they leave office,” it continued. “This could actually lead to the extortion and blackmail of a President. The other side would say, ‘If you don’t do something, just the way we want it, we are going to go after you when you leave office, or perhaps even sooner.’”

Supporters of the former president are celebrating the decision, taking to social media to celebrate the announcement.

“Massive victory for our next President,” wrote Fox News contributor Leo Terrell. “Supreme Court agreed to hear Trump’s Immunity Case. Go to hell Jack Smith! No trial in 2024!”

While fans of Trump were thrilled to hear the news, his critics were far less enthusiastic of the decision by the Supreme Court.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) claimed “The Supreme Court is placing itself on trial with its decision,” utilizing alarmist claims in her statement.

“The View” Host Whoopi Goldberg made the farfetched claim that if the Supreme Court were to rule that Trump has immunity in this case, that would permit President Joe Biden to “throw every Republican in jail.”

The case reaching the Supreme Court will undoubtedly lead to major ramifications in American politics but as to what they will specifically be, only time will tell.
