Teen Vogue Op-Ed Calls SCOTUS ‘Illegitimate’

Teen Vogue said that the current Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) is illegitimate because of the conservative justices in an op-ed published Thursday.

In the op-ed posted by Molly Collins and Tristan Brown, Justice Clarence Thomas was the first target. They agreed with the SCOTUS ruling that forced former President Donald Trump to overturn documents to the January 6 Commission. The problem, they noted, was that Thomas didn’t go along with the narrative.

They wrote, “In a Supreme Court where a third of the members were appointed by Trump, only Clarence Thomas noted his dissent. Thomas would have permitted the Trump White House to shield its records from congressional scrutiny.”

The January 6 Commission is headed by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi who refused to allow many Republicans on the committee and instead selected Republicans who would agree with her like Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY).

The op-ed pointed to Thomas’ wife’s activism to audit the election and said that he should have recused himself from voting on the matter.

They said, “As egregious as Justice Thomas’ refusal to recuse is, it is merely the latest display of the current Supreme Court’s illegitimacy. The creation of a 6-3 radically conservative supermajority on the Court is the result of a conservative legal movement determined to seize power at any cost.”

They also attacked the justices because of the leaked opinion to overturn Roe v. Wade. The op-ed quoted Trump at a 2016 presidential debate when he said, “If we put another two or perhaps three justices on, that is really what will happen. That will happen automatically in my opinion. Because I am putting pro-life justices on the court.”

Teen Vogue blamed Republicans for not confirming Democrat nominees to the SCOTUS, such as Merrick Garland, and they worry that the court will expand gun rights and limit the Environmental Protection Agency’s power.

They continued, “Unelected, unaccountable judges are on the verge of limiting our ability to fight climate change while forcing people to birth unwanted babies in a world with almost unlimited access to deadly weapons. It’s perhaps no wonder that a majority of Americans disapprove of the Supreme Court.”

The op-ed concluded with, “We are in a crisis moment — and it’s only getting worse. We must treat this Court as the emergency that it is. And that starts with structurally reforming the Court.” They explained that adding additional seats to the SCOTUS by passing the Judiciary Act of 2021. That would add four seats to the SCOTUS and as Collins and Brown described, it would “prioritize putting power back in the hands of democratically accountable individuals.”

What Teen Vogue is describing is making sure the Democrat party has as much control over governmental practice as possible. Fortunately, we have checks and balances in the United States that brings balance to power and stops authoritarian takeovers.
