MTG Pledges Legislation To Rename Gulf Of Mexico As Gulf Of America

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has vowed to introduce a bill renaming the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America,” a proposal inspired by President-elect Donald Trump. Greene announced her plans after watching Trump pitch the idea during a press conference earlier this week.

Trump criticized Mexico for its trade practices and immigration policies, calling for the name change as part of a broader push to assert American dominance. “The Gulf of America—that’s the name it deserves,” Trump said, describing the idea as both symbolic and appropriate.

Greene, speaking on a conservative podcast, expressed her enthusiasm for Trump’s vision. “I was so fired up after watching President Trump that I told my team to draft the bill immediately,” she said. The legislation would require federal agencies to adopt the new name, though details on enforcement remain unclear.

The proposal has drawn interest from Greene’s Republican colleagues, with some expressing support for co-sponsorship. However, the bill is expected to face challenges in the Senate, where it would need to clear the filibuster threshold. Additionally, implementing the name change could require federal funding, a point of contention for fiscal conservatives.

Trump’s remarks come amid his push for additional tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico, part of his plan to reshape U.S. trade policies. The president-elect has also floated more dramatic ideas, including a merger with Canada, a suggestion he framed as an economic and security solution.

Critics of the Gulf renaming initiative argue it serves little practical purpose and could alienate neighboring countries. However, Greene and her supporters view the proposal as a patriotic reassertion of American values and sovereignty.

As Trump prepares to take office, the Gulf of America proposal adds to the list of initiatives shaping his early agenda. Whether the legislation gains traction in Congress remains uncertain.
