McCarthy Downplays Impeachment If He Becomes House Speaker

A driving force behind the poll numbers showing it is very likely the GOP will retake control of the House has been the prospect of impeaching Joe Biden and other members of the administration. Now Minority Leader Kevin Rep. McCarthy (R-CA) appears ready to scrap any prospects of impeachment before Election Day even comes.

McCarthy’s cold water comes even as Republican House Members have introduced over a dozen resolutions calling for the impeachment of Biden, Kamala Harris, Attorney General Merrick Garland, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

The likely next Speaker of the House said last week that he thinks “the country doesn’t like impeachment used for political purposes at all.”

He said that when Democrats threatened impeachment against President Trump even before he was sworn in, “there wasn’t a purpose for it.” When McCarthy was asked directly whether there was even a single member of the Biden administration who could be subject to impeachment by the House, he said, “I don’t see it before me right now.”

Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) put Garland and Mayorkas on notice in recent weeks that substantial grounds for their impeachment already exist. Nonetheless, McCarthy is using the excuse that Democrats have already impeached President Trump twice as an excuse to close out even considering voting for the impeachment of any Biden officials.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has been the presenter of five of the impeachment resolutions during the first two years of the Biden administration. She has laid out the national security crisis the administration has created on the southern border and the “dereliction of duty in Afghanistan.”

Greene’s resolutions have of course gone nowhere under the leadership of Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Now, it appears that nothing much in that regard would change under McCarthy as Speaker.

It is unfortunate that McCarthy and some other Republicans in Washington only see political calculations when they consider what actions to take on behalf of the nation. Unless Republicans are ready to judge the actions of Biden, Mayorkas, Garland, and others against the Constitution and the law, naming McCarthy as the leader of the House in January may only guarantee more of the same abuses that have harmed the country in the last two years.
