The FBI and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a statement Friday addressing public fears about drone sightings in New Jersey. The agencies stated that there is no evidence the drones pose a national security risk or a public safety threat.
“We have no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus,” the statement read. The agencies suggested that many of the sightings are likely misidentified manned aircraft operating lawfully.
Investigators are working with the New Jersey State Police and using detection technology to confirm the sightings. However, the agencies admitted they have not corroborated any reports through electronic monitoring. They pointed out that mistaken identity is common in similar cases, further diminishing the likelihood of malicious activity.
The statement also highlighted gaps in current regulations regarding drones. “The reported sightings…highlight the insufficiency of current authorities,” the agencies said, calling for improvements to oversight and enforcement capabilities for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).
While similar sightings have been reported in Oregon and New York, federal officials maintain there is no evidence of a coordinated threat. However, President-elect Donald Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of answers, posting on Truth Social, “Mystery Drone sightings all over the Country. Can this really be happening without our government’s knowledge. I [don’t] think so! Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, [shoot] them down!”
As the investigation continues, skepticism persists among the public, with many questioning the government’s ability to manage the rise of drone technology effectively.
