An 80-year-old man from Hancock, Michigan, is in critical condition after an ATV driver allegedly ran him over while he was putting up a sign supporting President Donald Trump. Police believe the attack was politically driven.
On Sunday, Hancock police reported three related incidents involving the same suspect. The first two incidents were acts of vandalism against vehicles—one car had its tire valves broken, and another had its windows smashed out. Hancock Police Chief Tami Sleeman detailed these damages in a statement.
The most severe incident involved the elderly man who was re-erecting Trump signs in his yard on Anthony Street. The suspect had previously removed the signs. Around 5:45 p.m., the ATV driver returned and allegedly struck the man with his vehicle.
The victim was taken to UP Health System hospital in Portage, where he remains in critical condition with potential brain injuries. “We’re not sure what could happen. Could he die from these injuries? Possible,” Chief Sleeman said.
Police believe the suspect targeted Trump and law enforcement supporters. After identifying a suspect, authorities found the individual dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. They also discovered the ATV used in the incident and confiscated electronic devices for further investigation.
The suspect’s name has not been released. The investigation continues, but authorities have assured the public there is no ongoing threat.
