Democrats from border states are urging President Joe Biden to impose border policies that were present at the time of Donald Trump’s administration.
The Biden administration is planning to eliminate the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Title 42, according to anonymous Biden representatives who informed the Associated Press about the decision on Wednesday. Title 42 gave more power to the immigration authorities to send illegal migrants back to their home countries.
With Article 42 ending, it is expected that every month around 500,000 illegal immigrants will be ready to cross the US-Mexican border into the U.S., according to Biden’s officials.
Reps. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) and Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX), accompanied by the House and the Senate GOP members of Texas, have requested the Biden administration to continue with Title 42.
In a letter to the Biden administration, the democratic representatives highlighted their concerns regarding the reversal of Title 42.
The lawmakers also requested the Department of Homeland Security continue Title 42, until a suitable course of action is taken to make sure that the local government authorities and local communities will not be clogged by a spike in immigrant concerns.
They also criticized the Department of Homeland Security’s process of letting immigrants go on a “notice to report” basis which has decreased the holding time of immigrants at the Border Patrol Facility.
Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) also requested the Biden administration let Title 42 stay until they have a working strategy in place. Warner further expressed his concerns regarding the potential migrant influx at the border and how a strategy is the need of the hour to control this influx.
Just like Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), many others like Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) and Mark Kelly (D-AZ) have made the same call to the Biden administration, requesting they not end Title 42 without a plan in place to combat the resulting inflow of illegal migrants.
