DC Officer Fatally Shot During Attempt To Retrieve Gun From Storm Drain, Investigation Underway

A Washington, D.C., police officer was tragically killed on Wednesday when a gun discharged as he attempted to retrieve it from a storm drain, the D.C. Police Union reported. Officer Wayne David, a 25-year veteran, was fatally shot in the head during the incident.

Earlier in the day, officers observed a suspect jump from a suspicious vehicle and discard a firearm into a storm drain before fleeing on a motorcycle. While attempting to recover the gun, it discharged and struck David, according to the D.C. Police Union. Despite being rushed to the hospital, David did not survive his injuries.

The D.C. Police Union mourned the loss on social media, stating, “Please send your prayers to his family and coworkers. We are all devastated at this incredible loss.”
Executive Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll praised David’s dedication to his work, saying, “Wayne is a true hero to the District of Columbia, and today he gave his life to serve the visitors and the residents here.”

The investigation is ongoing as law enforcement seeks to identify the individual who discarded the weapon. Authorities have released descriptions of a suspect with long dreadlocks, last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue shorts.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser addressed the dangers faced by police officers, noting, “While preliminary information indicates that the gunshot was the result of a tragic accident, this is a horrible reminder of the dangers our officers face every day. We are grateful for their service.”
