Congress To Finalize Electoral Results, Confirming Trump’s Return

Today, Congress will formally certify the 2024 Electoral College results, confirming the victory of the once and future president, Donald Trump. Four years after he “lost” the 2020 election under heavily questioned circumstances, Trump will reclaim the White House with a decisive 312-226 Electoral College win.

The certification, overseen by Vice President Kamala Harris, will officially conclude the electoral process. Harris, as the president of the Senate, will preside over the joint session, which involves opening and reading state-certified results. Tellers will read the results aloud, confirming Trump’s resounding victory.

Challenges to state certifications must meet stringent requirements, including written objections signed by one-fifth of both chambers. While objections have added drama in past years, none are expected during today’s session.

This milestone occurs against the backdrop of lingering controversy over the 2020 election, which Trump’s supporters argue was riddled with irregularities. Then-Vice President Mike Pence’s decision to certify those results remains a source of frustration for many in Trump’s base.

Trump’s victory in 2024 comes as Republicans gain control of both chambers of Congress, setting the stage for significant legislative cooperation during his presidency. His campaign themes of restoring election integrity and strengthening national policies resonated strongly with voters.

Following today’s certification, Trump will prepare for his January 20 swearing-in ceremony, marking the official start of his second term.
