When Biden was campaigning in the 2020 presidential election, he made all sorts of wild and grandiose promises to his base. In a nutshell, then-candidate Biden said what he believed was necessary to get enough Democrats to vote for him.
However, now that Biden is in office, his voters expect him to fulfill his promises. Some Biden voters are so disappointed with what they’re seeing thus far that they’ve taken to social media, admitting their regrets over having voted for Biden.
As Newsmax points out, a critical issue that continues to haunt Biden is student loan debt.
This week, House Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez declared that Biden’s social spending bill needs to include the erasure of student loan debt. Thus far, the legislation which Democrats continue debating in Congress has not even touched upon the issues of student loans.
Ocasio-Cortez made it known on Instagram she believes Democrats need to “bring the heat” on the president to eliminate student loan debt. The congresswoman declared this is of significant importance since the president’s plan has already been considerably watered down at the request of moderate Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin.
Later, Ocasio-Cortez declared Biden doesn’t need the “permission” of Manchin to erase student loan debt. The progressive lawmaker also professed that Biden should use executive powers to eliminate student loans, proving his commitment to “the people.”
Ocasio-Cortez isn’t the first Democrat to call upon Biden to end student loan debts. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Elizabeth Warren have also made the exact demands of the president.
Despite how much Ocasio-Cortez wants Biden to sign an order and make student loan debt disappear, that’s not how it works. Despite the progressive fantasy, Biden does not have the power to make student loans go away unilaterally.
Even House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has admitted as much. Months ago, Pelosi stated that presidents have it within their power to delay or postpone student loan debt due dates. However, Pelosi (of all people) then went on to say the president does not have the authority to erase student loan debt altogether.
If Democrats across the country are waiting for Biden to absolve them of the debts they owe in student loans, they’re going to be very disappointed. People who owe student loan debts to the government would do well to get these debts paid off as soon as they possibly can.
