On Monday, President Joe Biden took a break from his normal duties to get some dental work done inside the White House after it was reported that he has been eating “like a child.”
Biden received root canal therapy behind closed doors at the White House, which came after the president reported pain in his lower right premolar on Sunday — according to a memo released by the White House from Biden’s personal physician Kevin O’Connor.
O’Connor reported that Biden received an exploratory root canal and had “tolerated the procedure well” with no complications.
This news came via a report from the Associated Press on Monday morning, with the outlet noting that Biden was experiencing “further discomfort” in his mouth following the procedure — though O’Connor said that was expected.
Biden’s dental work was performed by a team of specialists from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
According to the White House, Biden was not put under anesthesia for the exploratory root canal, which may be helpful in stemming a problem that he has been dealing with for some time.
The news of Biden’s dental work comes after reports from last month revealed that the president’s staff was concerned that he did not like to eat vegetables — and that Biden’s poor diet has been causing a constant fight between himself and his wife, first lady Jill Biden.
White House aides were quoted in a report by Axios as saying that Biden eats “like a child.”
The outlet further noted that there has been an “internal tug-of-war over Joe Biden’s diet” which they say “is just one of many public and private steps being taken by close aides and the first lady” to keep the elderly president healthy ahead of the upcoming 2024 presidential election season.
Some critics on social media responded to the news by pointing to Biden’s past problems with keeping his false teeth in place during a presidential debate:

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked about the reasons behind Biden’s tooth pain during a press briefing on Monday.
“Is [Biden] not good at brushing his teeth or does he need to floss better or anything?” the reporter asked.
“I am certainly not a dentist,” she responded.

Meanwhile, this is just the latest health complication Biden has faced, as the 80-year-old career politician has had two brain aneurysms in the past. According to a New York Times article from May 4, 1988, “Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. underwent surgery today to correct an aneurysm in an artery that supplies blood to the right side of the brain.”
“The 4 1/2-hour procedure was similar to that performed Feb. 12 on the left side of Mr. Biden’s brain,” the outlet’s report continued. “Under the procedure, a surgeon using a microscope pinches the aneurysm with a clip, bringing the walls of the artery together. The clip remains in the patient.”
Biden’s past medical procedures have been brought up throughout the past few years as part of a larger discussion about his physical health and cognitive decline.

“Americans don’t know that this guy’s had two brain aneurysms requiring brain surgery,” Donald Trump Jr. said during a radio appearance just before the 2020 election. The chances of being normal after one of those things is not very high. After two, it’s almost impossible.”
