Armed-Civilian Hero Stops El Paso Mall Shooting

A 16-year-old who allegedly killed one person and injured three others using a firearm at a Texas mall on Wednesday was shot by an armed civilian, the El Paso Police Department reports.

The teen suspect believed to be responsible for the shootings was allegedly shot by Emanuel Duran, 32, at the Cielo Vista Mall, police announced Friday.

Fox News reported that Duran is a licensed holder of a concealed carry permit.

A video shared on Twitter by Matt Couch appeared to show chaos stemming from the event.

“As soon as the shooting ended, the 16-year-old suspect began to run and was pointing the gun toward the direction of bystanders, including 32-year-old Emanuel Duran, a Licensed to Carry Holder. As the suspect ran toward Duran and bystanders, Duran drew his handgun and shot the suspect,” the police said.

According to numerous reports, shots began ringing after a confrontation erupted at the mall.

Once the suspect was shot and no longer a threat, Duran and an off-duty El Paso cop reportedly provided care to him and the other injured parties. Officials stated that the suspect is in stable condition.

KTSM reported that among those harmed are a 17-year-old boy who was seriously injured, a 17-year-old girl, a 16-year-old boy, a 14-year-old boy, and a 14-year-old girl.

A second group of affected patrons included a 16-year-old boy, who has been identified as the shooter, a 20-year-old man who was injured, a 17-year boy, and a 15-year-old boy.

Police have said the handgun used in the alleged crime was reported as stolen.

“It’s always concerning especially when a 16-year-old has a stolen handgun and fires a weapon inside a very crowded mall. It’s very concerning, it’s very disturbing actually,” commented El Paso police Sergeant Robert Gomez.

El Paso police have indicated that the investigation remains ongoing, with charges planned for the 16-year-old suspect.

According to the University Medical Center of El Paso, two victims of the shooting remain in critical condition. Another statement came from Del Sol Medical Center revealing that one of the shooting victims is in fair condition.
