This decision follows a high-profile incident involving local mother Rebekah Massie, who was removed from a meeting and arrested after expressing her concerns about the city attorney’s performance.
The council’s decision to revoke the regulation was reported by a local NBC affiliate, although details on the implementation timeline remain unclear. During the recent council meeting, members refrained from discussing the change, raising questions about future public discourse in the city.
The original rule was enforced during an Aug. 20 meeting, where Mayor Skip Hall accused Massie of making personal attacks. Despite her insistence that she was exercising her rights, Hall directed the police to escort her out, leading to her arrest and multiple misdemeanor charges.
In response to her treatment, Massie has filed a lawsuit against Mayor Hall, the city, and the involved police officer, with support from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE). The lawsuit argues that the council’s speech restriction violated her First Amendment rights.
