Anderson Cooper, a prominent CNN anchor, recently cast doubt on polls showing Vice President Kamala Harris with a lead over President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.
Appearing on “Late Night with Stephen Colbert,” Cooper expressed concerns about trusting the polls, given how they underestimated Trump’s support in the 2016 and 2020 elections.
“I don’t think I buy them,” Cooper said when discussing recent polling numbers. Harris has enjoyed a surge in the polls since becoming the Democratic nominee following President Biden’s exit from the race in July. However, Cooper’s comments suggest he is cautious about fully trusting the data, given the polling errors in Trump’s previous races.
Harris has seen her favorability rating improve dramatically since she entered the race, rising from -14 to +1, according to a recent CNN report. Trump, on the other hand, remains at -9. Despite this, election expert Nate Silver has reminded the public that polls have consistently underestimated Trump’s base in both 2016 and 2020.
Silver also pointed out that there are still three months left until the election, meaning more developments could shift the dynamics of the race. Cooper’s skepticism echoes the views of many who believe the 2024 race is far from over.
As Harris continues to lead in the polls, the question remains whether these numbers will hold or if Trump’s underestimated support will once again change the outcome.
